Michael O'Brien

Photographer Michael O’Brien is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He chose Austin as his home a dozen years ago when he left New York City, where he had lived and worked as a freelance magazine photographer for fourteen years. He began his career as a staff photographer for the Miami News, where he won two Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards and a World Understanding Award for his black-and-white photographs of the disadvantaged. O’Brien, who still shoots portraits for a living, has photographs in the permanent collections of the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography in New York, and the Wittliff Collection of Southwestern and Mexican photography at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. In 2003, Bright Sky Press published his first book, "The Face of Texas" a collection of 80 portraits that celebrate the spirit and character of the state
